2020.09.23Power to the Prisoners – Japan’s first life career school for inmates and juvenile releasees – is being jointly offered by the Oneness Foundation and YeeY.

The Oneness Foundation (Co-Chairs: Hiroki Ito, Takayuki Miyake), a recovery and growth support organization promoting "Mental and Physical Recovery and Well-being-Oriented Rehabilitation," and YeeY Inc., a corporate training and organizational development consultancy, have jointly launched Japan’s first life career school for inmates, "Power to the Prisoners! (P2P)."
P2P offers a residential training curriculum designed to help former inmates and juvenile releasees develop social and business skills. It supports them in leveraging their strengths and finding purpose, facilitating a successful reintegration into society.

Current Situation Surrounding Inmates

In Japan, the number of criminal offenses has been declining, and both first-time and repeat offenses are decreasing. However, the reduction in repeat offenses has been less pronounced than for first offenses, leading to a higher proportion of repeat offenders among those prosecuted and creating the misleading perception that "once a criminal, always a criminal."

Additionally, former inmates face challenges such as lack of employment, money, and housing, as well as societal stigma and unresolved personal issues (disabilities, mental health conditions, or trauma). Even those who desire reintegration often find that their past mistakes create significant obstacles, leading to recidivism.

Objectives of Power to the Prisoners!

Previous efforts to support inmate employment have focused on job placement, but they often lacked sufficient support for the transition between release and employment. Without acquiring essential communication and business skills, and before fully recovering physically and mentally, former inmates faced difficulties in rejoining society.

To address these issues, P2P offers life and career training over six months, helping inmates identify and utilize their strengths for meaningful reintegration. The program supports both physical and mental recovery, providing comprehensive assistance for smooth reintegration.
