Kunihiko Asai
Born in 1986 near Kashima Shrine in Miyachu, Kashima City, Ibaraki Prefecture, founded in the first year of Emperor Jimmu. After graduating from the Department of Architecture at Nihon University College of Science and Technology, he apprenticed as a carpenter at Kongo Gumi, the world’s oldest company, founded in 578, and a collective of temple carpenters. In 2016, he established Kichi Inc. and became independent. Expanding beyond temple and shrine work, he ventured into projects such as traditional house restoration, treehouses, installations, and art. He contributed to projects like the decentralized hotel Sawara Merchant Town Hotel NIPPONIA and NIPPONIA Kosuge Genryu no Mura. In the 2019 art event SENSE ISLAND on Sarushima, Tokyo Bay's only natural island, he joined the team of Ken Farmer and Caroline Maxwell, overseeing installations. In 2021, he co-founded the Sawara Yamori Corporation with local volunteers, led by architect and CEO of Bluestudio, Mr. Oshima. In 2022, he joined the Creative Heritage Organization (HERITA), an association promoting the use and creation of cultural heritage. His creative concept centers on crafting sacred spaces through human engagement, with a focus on wood joinery techniques and exploring new possibilities for wood while honoring the material's natural qualities.
